Mona Lisa Smile Secrects REVEALED
Saturday, January 28, 2006
So, Mona Lisa was really smiling after all.
Latest research findings show that Mona Lisa was 83 percent happy, 9 percent disgusted, 6 percent fearful, and 2 percent angry.
Below is a CNN report on the findings
Computer decodes Mona Lisa's smile
(CNN) -- Scientists analyzed the portrait of the Mona Lisa, a woman with famously mixed emotions, hoping to unlock her smile. They applied emotion recognition software that measures a person's mood by examining features such as the curve of the lips and the crinkles around the eyes.
The findings? Mona Lisa was 83 percent happy, 9 percent disgusted, 6 percent fearful, and 2 percent angry, according to the British weekly New Scientist.
Still, scientists will probably never know what made her feel the way she did.
The computer software, developed by Nicu Sebe at the University of Amsterdam and researchers at the University of Illinois, examines key facial features, the journal reports.
Sebe loaded average, neutral expressions of female faces into a database, which the software used to compare the painting against, says the "New Scientist" Web site.
Leonardo Da Vinci's masterpiece is housed at the Louvre, in Paris, France, and is the museum's top draw.
The Mona Lisa -- called La Gioconda in Italian and La Joconde in French -- has captivated and mystified the art world for centuries.
The portrait was painted in Florence, Italy, between 1503 and 1506, according to the Louvre's Web site.Historians have long debated Mona Lisa's identity, with theories ranging from being Da Vinci's mother, a self-portrait or a Florentine prostitute.
Research conducted in 2004 support a claim first made almost 500 years ago -- that she really existed and that she was the wife of a rich silk merchant.
The Mona Lisa is featured in author Dan Brown's best-selling novel The Da Vinci Code.
By the way, would Mona Lisa still smile when she sees what she would look like after a week's travel to the United States? Got this from an Italian site. Whoah.
The Chronicles of Narnia (Review) (NO SPOILERS)
Follows the exploits of the four Pevensie siblings--Lucy, Edmund, Susan and Peter--in World War II England who enter the world of Narnia through a magical wardrobe while playing a game of 'hide and seek' in the rural country home of an elderly professor. Once there, the children discover a charming, peaceful land inhabited by talking beasts, dwarfs, fauns, centaurs, and giants that has become a world cursed to eternal winter by the evil White Witch, Jadis. Under the guidance of a noble and mystical ruler, the lion Aslan, the children fight to overcome the White Witch's powerful hold over Narnia in a spectacular, climactic battle that will free Narnia from Jadis' icy spell forever.
REVIEW (No Spoilers):
No plot spoilers here. The movie was cool, but had a handful of disappointments that kept it from being great. Mostly visual disappointments. Many scenes with the wolves (usually from a slight distance) looked fake, like, really com
puter generated looking. Pretty much all of the other creatures in Narnia looked awesome. There were some scenes with the kids in which they didn't look like they were actually IN the scene. Like, they didn't match with the background, and stood out from it. Almost like they were standing in front of a screen that was showing the world behind them. Also, the short time you see a couple of giants on the white witch's side... they looked rediculous. Like a couple of tall guys you'd pass in the store while shopping. There were also some fairly boring parts to the movie... unless I was just tired, which is possible.
On the upside, other than those, the visuals were pretty good. The battle scenes completely rocked - some of the best I've seen in a movie. The acting was good, although the little girl always seemed like she was smiling even when I'm pretty sure she was supposed to be upset. I'm also guessing the movie would have been cooler if I didn't remember all of the main events from when I read the book many years ago. Overall, I'd say it was definitely worth seeing!
Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince (SPOILER)
Friday, January 27, 2006
Snape is the new Defense Against Dark Arts teacher. The new teacher at Hogwarts, Horace Slughorn, teaches Potions (Snape's old subject).
The Half Blood Prince is a name found in a used Advanced potions book Harry uses that gives helpful potions tips and spells, one of which is extremely dangerous. The Half-Blood Prince turns out to be Severus Snape. Half-Blood refers to the fact that his father was a muggle (Tobias Snape) but the Prince part refers to his mother's maiden name (Eileen Prince).
Harry rightly suspects Draco Malfoy of being a Death Eater. Draco manages to sneak Death Eaters into Hogwarts using a pair of vanishing cabinets. Draco was supposed to kill Dumbledore, but finds himself unable to.
Dumbledore and Harry explore Voldemort's past, learning about Horcruxes, which are divisions of Voldemort's soul, making him immortal until they are all destroyed. There are Seven pieces of his soul (two already destroyed) including the one in Voldemort. Harry and Dumbledore try to get one, but the aftermath leaves Dumbledore weak and unable to fight off the Death Eaters.
It turns out the Death Eater that overheard the prophecy and told it to Voldemort (leading to Harry's parents' deaths) was Severus Snape. Snape turns up after Draco cannot kill Dumbledore and kills Dumbledore. Draco, Snape, and the Death Eaters escape afterwards. Hogwarts is probably going to be closed but Harry announces he won't be returning anyway; he will attempt to finish the work he a Dumbledore started, destroying Horcruxes so Voldemort can be destroyed.
Relationships (if you're into that): Harry Potter ends up dating Ginny Weasley, it appears that Ron Weasley and Hermione Granger get together, Bill Weasley and Fleur are going to get married, and Remus Lupin and Nymphadora Tonks are also together.
The Da Vinci Code (SPOILER)
This book sees the return of Robert Langdon, an ancient symbols professor, from Brown's earlier book Angel's and Demon's. In this book Langdon is paired up with a beautiful French Police Cryptologist who happens to be the estranged granddaughter of the recently murdered Head of the French museum the Louvre.
As the murdered fellow is dying he leaves some clues behind to a secret that he, along with three other men, has been charged with keeping.
The secret has been kept hidden for two thousand years. Langdon, along with his new Woman friend follow clues hidden within Leonardo Da Vinci art and papers.
The secret? That Jesus Christ not only was married to Mary Magdalene, but that they produced a child. The clues that Langdon follows eventually leads him to find the resting place for the remains of Mary Magdalene, under an inverted Pyramid of glass that resides in front of the Louvre
SAW II (review)
Jigsaw is back. The brilliant, disturbed mastermind who wreaked havoc is back for another round of horrifying life-or-death games. When a new murder victim is discovered with all the signs of Jigsaw's hand, Detective Eric Matthews begins a full investigation and apprehends Jigsaw with little effort. But for Jigsaw, getting caught is just another part of his nefarious plan. Eight more of his victims are already fighting for their lives--and now it's time for Mason to join the game.
At the movies, Halloween is never just plain-old scary anymore. No, it's gory, gruesome and repulsive. It's about heads getting chopped off, human flesh being devoured and devilish tricks being played with a sharp scythe.
Since the original "The Texas Chain Saw Massacre," "Night of the Living Dead," "The Exorcist," "Seven" and "The Silence of the Lambs," we've stepped ever more deeply into the bloody muck of madness.
Not that there's anything wrong with gore. "Silence of the Lambs" deserved its best picture Oscar. And if any of the horde of horror films we've seen lately — like remakes of "House of Wax" and "The Amityville Horror" — had a tenth of the cinematic dread achieved in "Alien," we'd be much better off and certainly more scared.
There's a distinctive art to this kind of filmmaking, and, some of the time, these new movies pull it off. They make one queasy, disgusted and often unnerved.
"Saw II," of course, follows the bloody trail of "Saw," last year's jigsaw puzzle gorefest in which Cary Elwes is driven crazy enough to hack off his own foot. The original Lions Gate film cost almost nothing to make ($1.2 million) and earned more than $55 million at the box office.
In other words, the studio immediately ordered up a second round of torturous head contraptions with super-pointy spikes, eye gougings and gleeful bloodlettings.
The sequel keeps the original film's veneer — the urban, industrial, oily, claustrophic and nearly colorless vibe cemented into popular horror culture by films like "Seven."
The story pits hard-nosed detective Eric Mason (Donnie Wahlberg) against the returning Jigsaw Killer (Tobin Bell), the soft-spoken, self-righteous demon who sets up puzzles that his victims will either solve or die trying.
There's this house, see. And plenty of potential victims plopped into it — victims portrayed by C-list (or, really, D-list) talent like Glenn Plummer ("Speed"), Franky G ("Manito") and Beverley Mitchell (TV's "Seventh Heaven").
There's death by bullet, by fire and, especially, by whomp-up-the-backa-yo-head with a nail-spiked club.
The film's energy is fueled by fast-paced editing, overblown dialogue ("Oh, yes, there will be blood"), the multilayered guessing game (will anybody solve the riddle of how to get out of that house?) and the truly disgusting (hey, let's toss this ex-druggie woman into a big pile of used needles and syringes).
"Saw" fans — and there are plenty — will be pleased.

PBB Celebrity Edition Premieres on February 4
Preparations for the much-awaited celebrity edition of Pinoy Big Brother are now in full swing with only few weeks left before the ball starts rolling for the 12 celebrities who will take on the new challenges of Big Brother!
The celebrity edition of the phenomenal reality show is scheduled to premiere on the night of February 4 on ABS-CBN. According to Linggit Tan, one of Pinoy Big Brother’s business unit heads, the opening night of the celebrity edition will be very different from what happened on August 21, when Big Winner Nene and the other 11 original housemates went inside Kuya’s house for the first time.
On the opening night, the 12 celebrity housemates will be brought to a special venue, where they will be presented to the public for the first time. After the grand presentation, a motorcade will take them to Big Brother’s house.
“PBB celebrity edition will run for six weeks (42 days) that’s why it's a fast-paced and very thrilling experience not only for the 12 housemates but also for the viewers,” Tan said. The nomination and eviction process will happen twice a week until four housemates are left inside the house.
The New Housemates
She also explained that the new batch of housemates will not only consist of actors and actresses. There’s also a possibility that well-known athletes, singers, directors and even politicians could be part of the new batch.
As of the moment, the lineup for the 12 housemates is not yet complete. The auditions are still on going but only on an appointment basis. “Hindi na tayo nag-o-open audition, those who want to join, they call us and we setup an interview,” Tan disclosed during an interview.
The staff of the show started the audition process last month where about 150 celebrities, including some big names in showbizness, showed up in a matter of two days. Just like those who auditioned during the first run of Pinoy Big Brother, the housemate wannabes had to go through several VTR interviews and even psychological tests and physical examinations. “May psychological test din sila at physical exams, required talaga yun kasi stressful yun condition yung sa loob (ng bahay), they should be physically fit and have a sound mind, nakikita kasi yun sa mga test, so kapag hindi ni-recommend ng mga psychologist, hindi namin sila pinipili,” Tan explained.
She also added that the 12 lucky celebrities who will be picked as housemates will participate in the contest for a cause. During the opening night, the housemates will be asked to state how much of their winnings will they donate to their chosen charity if in case they become the Big Winner of the celebrity edition.
A facelift for Kuya’s house!
With new faces to grace the place, Big Brother’s house will have some exciting changes before the opening night. Although they will not renovate the structure of the house, Tan said that the house’s interior will undergo a facelift.
Aside from Pinoy Big Brother Primetime, Pinoy Big Brother Uplate and Studio 23’s Si Kuya, Kabarkada Mo! will also start airing this February. Keep posted on ABS-CBN and this site to get the latest updates on Pinoy Big Brother Celebrity Edition.
